Reviving my creative writing life
It's always been my dream to write fiction. I've wanted to make a living as a storyteller since a young age, but realized I needed to do something that would keep me from starving to death, so pursued journalism as a career, eventually winding up in the magazine business. While I've gained lots of great experience along the way, it hasn't left much time for fiction writing. Besides, after writing all day for my job, the last thing I usually feel like doing when I settle down for the night is write.
Recently, a reorganization at my company has meant a lot less of my workday is spent writing, so I thought it'd be the perfect time to quit making excuses and find some time to do the type of writing I really love. I do enjoy talking to scientists and bringing attention to their work through the articles I write at my day job, but it looks like I'll be doing a lot less of that with new priorities being assigned and I want to make sure my skills stay sharp as well as force myself to practice my fiction.
I may also dabble in some creative non-fiction, but we'll see how things go and what is reasonable with the spare time I have.
My original plan was to write a short story every two weeks, plus a blog either every one to three days on random topics, plus how my latest writing projects are going. But, I'm now certain that that's a little ambitious, so will aim to write one short fictional story per month, with a blog every one to three days, readjusting that schedule as needed.
Things will probably get pretty random on this site as I figure out what I want it to be and do and how much time I can put in without going crazy.
Wish me luck!
