Writing struggles
Latest writing challenges and ideas to get over them.
Not sure what else I can say that's really new. I'm still obviously struggling to write regularly. Thinking about writing is important, but you still eventually need to write something and do it often enough to get a body of work out there. I think that I just need to accept that I'm going to post a lot of crap on this site before I write anything good. I don't have the time I need to set aside to make it really good right away.
I re-read my review of The Glass Hotel that I've been working on and thought it was crap. I cut a lot out and I'm still not happy with it. To be fair, all it is so far is a scattering of thoughts thrown together in half an hour, but it's difficult to not be hard on myself. Other people find time for their passions and have full-time jobs and families. But maybe they have other supports that I don't have.
Again, it all comes down to having some structure. Whether I post something once a month or once a week, I still need some sort of regular schedule. I can't just wait until the day before it's time to post and throw something together. Maybe I'm resisting a schedule and structure because it reminds me too much of work and I want this site to be fun. Then, there are the usual thoughts common to just about every writer—who's going to care what I write? There are millions of better writers than me. Everything I write is crap or just not exciting enough. But there are also so many people in the world that at least some have to like what I write.
The whole point of this blog and site was just to get me writing creatively/for fun on a regular basis again, not to magically write something that's amazing and popular, though it would be great if that happened. Even if everything I write here is garbage, at least it will teach me how to stay motivated enough to keep writing. I should check out what other writers do to combat the problems I've been facing, and do a better job of being part of the writing community.
While I haven't been able to do a lot of writing lately, I have been enjoying reading all the magazines I get with Apple + News. National Geographic History is what I've been into these days. I've noticed with the magazines I've read with the app so far is that none of them are very long, given the struggles of print publishing, I assume. It's also interesting that National Geographic History seems to use all stock photos rather than having photographers on staff or paying freelancers. Just some initial thoughts.
Lastly, I finally got around to watching Deadpool 2 and thought it was awesome. Made me remember why I love movies and storytelling so much. The writers clearly had a blast putting together the screenplay and the actors had to have enjoyed making the movie as well. I wish I could have that much fun writing again. If I can keep writing this shitty blog, maybe I will eventually.
